CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season for a Wednesday night clash in Rock Hill, where they will face intrastate rival Winthrop at 7 p.m.
The Cougars tasted defeat in their home-opener Sunday when they fell 62-49 to Charlotte. However, it was a game of historical significance for two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year Bre Bolden, who tallied a career-high eight steals and broke the CofC Division I Era Record for most steals in a career with 243. Tanisha Brown also flourished in her CofC debut, registering a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
The Cougars and Eagles have a lengthy history which stretches back to the 1970s, and Wednesday will be the 29th meeting between the two programs. The Cougars control the decisive 25-3 advantage in the all-time series, though Winthrop has found success in recent years.
The two squads played last season in Charleston in what turned out to be a 77-63 victory for CofC. Bolden (19-10) and Kelsey Booth (15-12) both logged double-doubles in the win, while Darien Huff scored a career high 18 points en route to CAA Rookie of the Week honors. Aliyah Kilpatrick had the rare double-double with steals for the Eagles (28-10) while Arianne Whitaker nearly pulled off a double-double with a 9-11 performance. However, neither player graces the Eagle roster this time around.
The Eagles split their opening two games of the season, blitzing NC Wesleyan 89-40 before falling back to Earth on Monday with a 63-55 loss to S.C. State. Thus far, Erica Williams leads Winthrop in scoring (16.5 PPG) and passing (6.5 APG), while Teyiahna Green leads the team on the glass with 12.5 RPG.
