MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (13-8) snapped its three-match losing streak Tuesday in emphatic fashion, knocking off CAA-rival Drexel (10-3) by a score of 6-1.
The Cougars took the early lead in doubles competition and didn't look back. Katherine Schofield and Mara Argyriou continued their incredible spree of doubles victories in the top flight, vanquishing Honami Yazawa and Clary Rodriguez Cruz 6-1 and increasing their win-streak to 16 straight.
Liza Fieldsend and Sarah Zschunke kept things rolling in the third flight with a 6-3 victory over Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence. Brooke McAmis and Helena Nyikos completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win in flight two.
Singles play was more of the same for the Cougars. Katherine Schofield earned the first win in flight two with a near-shutout over Clary Rodriguez Cruz (6-0, 6-1). Fellow senior Brooke McAmis was right behind her, notching a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bowsher in the third flight.
Freshman Diana Colen had the distinction of scoring the clinching point in the sixth flight, tallying the 6-3, 6-2 win over Anisiya Simpson. After that, junior Liza Fieldsend bounced back from a tough loss Monday to put Honami Yazawa away 6-2, 6-4 in the top flight.
The most thrilling match of the day belonged to Nyikos and Providence in fourth-flight action. The Austrian secured the top flight 6-4, but things got very interesting from there when Providence battled back in the second flight to force a tiebreaker, which she wound up winning 7-6(5). That forced a deciding super-tiebreak for the third set. The lead changed hands multiple times, but in the end, Nyikos gutted out the 10-7 win to give the College its sixth and final point of the day.
“I was proud of the way the ladies responded today,” Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “We've let a couple matches slip away from us, and we did a good job of closing out the match right away today to put it out of Drexel's reach. I was thrilled with the doubles specifically, it was probably one of the smartest matches we've played this year.
The Cougars will return to action Wednesday afternoon against No. 68 Illinois at 1:30 p.m. Admission for women's tennis is free of charge. For those who cannot attend, a live stream is available at stre.am/cofctennis
