MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team split its matches on Sunday, falling to No. 52 Georgia State, 4-1, before rising up to defeat The Citadel, 6-1.
The Cougars (13-6) entered the day looking to build upon their three game winning streak. They opened Sunday's matches with a matchup against No. 52 ranked Georgia State (15-4) that had won nine of its past 10 matches.
Charleston's women's tennis team played matches throughout the middle of the day on Sunday, leaving the men's team with a twilight contest under the lights at Patriots Point against cross-town foe, The Citadel, who entered the match with an 8-25 record in 2016.
Charleston secured the doubles point early in the first match against Georgia State, with wins from its No. 1 pairing of Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas, 6-3, and No. 3 pairing of Zack Lewis and Charlie Ghriskey, 6-2.
Unfortunately, The College would not have as much success in the singles competitions, as they would drop the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 flights to Georgia State. Due to time restrictions for the Tennis Complex at Patriots Point, the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights were left unfinished, as the match had already been decided.
The men's team fared much better in their second event, topping the Citadel in every flight except the No. 2 singles, which required a tie-breaker to decide. Josh Record picked up his fourth singles win of the season, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 position, and Ryan Khan won his match at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-2.
Charleston took all three doubles flights, even though the No. 66 ranked paring of Estevarena and Encinas was apart due to Encinas being held out due to some soreness. Estevarena played his first match with Vasily Kichigin of the season in the No.1 spot, 6-2.
The College will look to build some momentum in a pivotal heading into the end of its season, as they face Elon in a rescheduled match, on Wednesday, April 6. The match will be Charleston's final conference competition prior to the CAA tournament, which starts on April 21.
