Cougars Bypass Bulldogs in 1-0 Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the second straight game this weekend, the College of Charleston women's soccer team (5-3) absolutely steam-rolled the shot battle en route to a 1-0 win, doing so Sunday on the road against cross-town rival The Citadel (3-2).
• Raymara Barreto cracked the scoreless gridlock in the 77th minute on a feed from Tracey Webster. Barreto handled the ball ten yards beyond the box, dribbled around defenders before launching a strike to the high corner for her second goal of the season.
• Lauren Killian was afforded another quiet day in net thanks to a strong defensive performance in front of her. Killian's shutout streak climbs to 455 minutes thanks to her two-save effort. The Cougars have now picked up five straight shutout wins, outscoring opponents 12-0 in that period. The last time the CofC women's soccer program posted five straight shutouts was in 2009. That team went on to finish 12-7-2.
• The College led in shots at half 10-1, and wound up prevailing in the category 20-6 at game's end. The Cougars found the frame eight times, leading to the Bulldogs' Logan Leask having a busy day in net with seven saves. Laura Ortega finished the affair with seven shots, three of which were on target.
“This team continues to grow every day,” head coach Christian Michner said. “We've worked a lot on our team defending in past years in making sure we're difficult to break down, and it helps that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the conference in Lauren Killian. We've been a really difficult team to create chances against. I'm proud of the win, but I'm even more proud that we continue to keep this shutout streak going.”
“The girls stuck with the gameplan today in our tactics with the ball, but as the game goes on without yielding a goal, frustration starts to set in,” Michner said. “Huge credit to The Citadel, they played extremely well and they came out motivated. Our games are always close because they're difficult to break down. Hopefully we'll start to improve on our goal-scoring rate and not just chances created.”
The Cougars will continue their road trip Thursday when they head to Florida to challenge the Jacksonville Dolphins (2-5) on Sep 15 at 5 p.m.
