Cougars Match School-Record with 1-0 Win
9/30/2016 10:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team matched its school record for the longest undefeated streak in school history Friday night, rising to 8-3-1 on the season by way of a 1-0 victory over the Hofstra Pride (6-5-1; 0-3 vs. CAA).
• Laura Ortega served up her third assist of the season off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute thanks to an outstanding header in traffic from fellow sophomore Raymara Barreto. Ortega rose to a team-leading 12 points on the season, while Barreto's goal was her third of the season, and first since her game-winner against The Citadel back on Sep 11.
• The Cougars' unbeaten streak extended to nine games, matching the school-record set back in 2004. That team tied a contest before winning eight in a row, ultimately finishing the season 12-5-3 and 7-2-2 in SoCON play. The Cougars have now outscored opponents 17-1 over the course of their spree, and have outshot opponents 222-133 over the course of the season.
• Though they were held off the scoresheet, the Cougars absolutely dominated the opening half of play, outshooting the Pride 14-4. Following Barreto's goal, the Pride turned up the intensity on offense, and in the final 17 minutes, outshot the Cougars 7-1. Yet CofC stood tall, and finished out the game with a 23-15 advantage in shots and a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Lauren Killian earned the shutout with six saves on the evening.
• Friday was a night of big milestones for the College. Not only did they match the record, they also managed to beat Hofstra for the first time in school-history, having first met the Pride back in 1997. What's more, the Cougars stand alone as the only team undefeated in CAA conference play at 1-0-1.
"The girls came out of the gate fired up and ready to play," head coach Christian Michner said. "All 32 players contributed to our win tonight. The energy on the sideline was contagious, and that sends ripples through the players on the field. That was a major factor. It was an unbelievable team performance tonight."
"Hofstra's an amazing team, they've been one of the best teams in the league for a number of years," Michner said. "We knew they were going to come at us, they were playing direct and applying tons of pressure. I'm proud of our team for following through and being resilient, and nine games unbeaten…that's pretty amazing. It takes an entire team to get it done."
The Cougars will have their sets on breaking the record outright Sunday when they face the Northeastern Huskies (7-5-1; 2-1 vs. CAA) on Sunday. As a reminder, a video broadcast will be unavailable, so fans who wish to see the Cougars chase history with their own eyes will need to come to Patriots Point in person at 1 p.m.
