CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (1-0) begins a three-game road trip, starting with a Sunday showdown with the Furman Paladins (0-0) at 2 p.m.
The Cougars opened their season with an 85-69 win at home against Lipscomb. Shiclasia Brown had a debut to remember, scoring a career-high 29 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists to lead all players. Tanisha Brown also had a very effective outing, notching her 11th career double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds on 75% shooting. All told, the Cougars shot just under 50% as a team, limiting themselves to just 13 turnovers.
The College and the Paladins have an extensive history from when the two shared a conference together. Furman controls the 24-16 advantage in a series dating back to 1974. It will be the teams' first meeting since the Cougars joined the CAA. The last time they met was in Greenville, at the tail end of the 2013 season, when the College won 70-58 thanks to a 20-14 double-double from Afreyea Tolbert.
Sunday will be Furman's season opener, with their only other action this season being an exhibition victory over Warren Wilson. Last season, Furman went 14-17 overall en route to a first round exit from the SoCon Tournament at the hands of UNCG. The Paladins return two of their three players who averaged double-digit scoring last year in senior forward Cierra Carter and sophomore guard Le'Jzae Davidson. Carter was also the team's leading rebounder last year at 8.2 per game.
