Cougars Visit Hokies to Play in First-Ever Collegiate Playsight Dual Match
2/20/2017 3:33:00 PM | Men's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (4-2) will be part of an innovative part of collegiate tennis history this Tuesday when they travel up north to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3) at 1:30 p.m.
The two teams will compete in the first collegiate dual match to use Playsight technology. The system has been utilized in the past for tournament competition and USC used it in the fall for the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. It allows every player using a Playsight SmartCourt to challenge and review close line calls. VT's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center has six such courts.
The Cougars come off back-to-back losses in the Sunshine State to Florida State and North Florida after starting the season 4-0, and will be looking for the chance to rebound against the Hokies. It will be a tough test however, as the Cougars faced VT last season on the road as well, which resulted in a 7-0 loss.
After losing its first three matches of a three-match road swing to start the year, Virginia Tech returned home to pick up a pair of wins over St. Bonaventure and Davidson. The Hokies have two players nationally ranked for their acumen in singles play, with No. 37 Jai Corbett and No. 85 Henrik Korsgaard leading the way. Corbett is 3-1 at the No. 1 position, which will likely pit him against CofC ace Juan Estevarena. Korsgaard meanwhile is 2-0 in the No. 4 position, which could pit him against any of the likes of Vasily Kichigin, Rodrigo Encinas or Ryan Khan.
