LINCOLN, Neb. --- Riley Knudsen (Cabot, Ark.) gave the College of Charleston baseball team an early lead with a solo home run, but Nebraska rallied with a four-run fifth en route to a 6-1 victory over the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field.
Nebraska (8-8) collected six runs on 10 hits – including two for extra bases – while limiting College of Charleston (8-11) to one run on three hits. Knudsen paced the offense with a solo homer, as Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) and Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) each picked up a single.
Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) allowed three runs on five hits in four innings to take the loss, while Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) surrendered two runs in three and one-third relief frames. Christian Shiver (Monroe, Ga.) recorded two outs in the eighth.
Derek Burkamper allowed one run on Knudsen's solo shot, and struck out five in six and two-thirds to pick up the win. Jake McSteen tossed two scoreless innings, and exited with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth. Chad Luensmann earned the save by retiring the final batter with the base full of Cougars, and the tying run standing in the on-deck circle.
The Cougars got on the board first in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Knudsen launched a 2-1 pitch to right for his first home run at The College. Nebraska answered in the fourth with a solo homer from Miller to knot the score at 1-1.
The Huskers took a 5-1 advantage with a four-run fifth, which included a two-run single to center by Schreiber. An RBI single by the Husker's Cronenbold would push the margin to 6-1 in the home half of the eighth.
Charleston threatened to close the gap in the ninth, with Roper and Wondrack picking up back-to-back singles to put men on first and second for Dixon. Following a fly out to right and a wild pitch, pinch-hitter Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) worked a five-pitch walk to load the bases with two outs. Luensmann would then enter from the 'pen and shut the door, retiring the final batter via strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
The Cougars and Huskers will close out the weekend series on Sunday morning at 11:05 am CT at Hawks Field. Sunday's finale will pit Cougar freshman Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) against Nebraska junior Jake Meyers.
