MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) drove in four runs with a 2-for-3 effort, as the College of Charleston baseball team utilized a seven-run third to cruise to a 12-1 win over Hostra on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The College of Charleston (9-14, 1-1 CAA) plated 12 runs on nine hits – including four extra-base knocks – while limiting Hofstra (6-15, 1-1 CAA) to one run on 10 hits. Hart, Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.), and Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) each collected two hits, while Hart drove in a season-high four runs. Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) and Erven Roper (Easley, S.C.) both plated two runs.
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) tossed six and two-thirds shutout innings to earn his first collegiate win, as he struck out three and scattered seven hits. Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) pitched two and one-third frames in relief with seven strikeouts.
Brad Witkowski paced the Pride with a 2-for-4 day, as Sean Rausch drove in Hofstra's lone run. Jorge Marrero last three and one-third innings, and surrendered nine runs (five earned) to take the loss. Michael James, Seamus Brazill, and Matt Weissheier combined for the final four and two-thirds frames, allowing three runs and walking eight.
The Cougars opened the scoring with a seven-run third, which was capped by a bases-clearing double from Hart following a two-run single by Wondrack. Roper pushed the lead to 9-0 with a two-run home run down the left field line in the third – his third big fly of the season – before Seth Wall (Georgetown, S.C.) scampered home on Dixon's infield single to stretch the margin to 10-0.
Hart plated another run with a bases loaded single back to the mound in the eighth, before Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) drew a walk in the next at-bat to push the lead to 12-0. The Pride would get on the board with one in the ninth before McLarty shut the door with a strikeout.
The Cougars and Pride will play the rubber game of the three-game weekend on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Patriots Point. Charleston junior Tucker White (Sterling, Okla.) will take the ball opposite Hofstra sophomore John Rooney.
