PHILADELPHIA - The College of Charleston women's tennis team (12-7) had a strong showing in doubles play Sunday against Drexel (13-3), but four straight losses in singles play dashed the Cougars' chances as the Dragons prevailed 4-1 at Penn's Hecht Tennis Center.
The Cougars scored the doubles point, taking 6-4 matches on courts one and two. It was Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely's second straight doubles win on the weekend, as the duo improved to 10-6 on the year.
Drexel jumped out to an early lead in singles play, winning 6-4, 6-2 on court one and 6-2, 6-1 on court three to go up 2-1. They picked up their next point on court two with the 6-4, 6-4 win on court two, and won the match with a hotly contested 7-6(2), 6-4 win in the fourth flight.
In the lower flights, Turner Yates had won the first set and trailed in the second set 5-3 before action was called. Anastasia Palaska meanwhile led 3-2 in the third set of a thrilling encounter with Clary Rodriguez Cruz before the match was prematurely ended.
The Cougars return to the Palmetto State, where their road swing now sends them west for a double-header next Sunday with South Carolina and SC State.
