CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team is once again set to host the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic to open the 2017 season, as the Cougars welcome Denver, Tennessee State, and USC Upstate to TD Arena this weekend.
"I can't wait for the season to begin tomorrow," said head coach Jason Kepner. "It is always great to open the season at home. It should be a good weekend of high level volleyball that will definitely test, and show us what we need to work on moving forward."
The Cougars open the 2017 season as the preseason favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title with 11 players returning from last fall's squad. Seniors Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio), Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.), and Jane Feddersen (Leesburg, Va.) lead a deep and talented team that also includes juniors Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.), Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.), Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.), and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.).
Denver begins the campaign as the preseason pick to win the Summit League for the fourth season in a row, and received five of the eight possible first-place votes. The Pioneers captured their third straight Summit League regular season and tournament championships last fall. Senior right side Kayla Principato led the Pioneers with 349 kills last season en route to an All-Summit League selection.
Tennessee State is coming off a 17-16 season with a new coach at the helm in Donika Sutton. The Tigers are picked eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, and return three starters from last season's squad. Preseason All-OVC selection Julia Pierson led the Tigers in blocks (90), and ranked second on the team with 275 kills.
USC Upstate enters the 2017 season picked to finish sixth in the race for the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title, and return five starters from last fall's 14-19 squad. ASUN Second Team All-Conference selection Madison Haake led the team with 1,147 assists last season, while ranking second in digs (392) and service aces (29).
Denver and Tennessee State will open the weekend on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm, before the Cougars take the floor for the first time in 2017 against USC Upstate at 7:00 pm. The full weekend schedule can be found below. Live stats for all matches can be found via cofcstats.com.
