WILMINGTON, N.C. --- Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) each delivered a clutch go-ahead hit for the College of Charleston baseball team, but it was not enough as UNC Wilmington walked off with a 6-5 win over the Cougars in Colonial Athletic Association play on Thursday evening.
The setback drops College of Charleston (34-17, 14-8 CAA) into a three-way tie for second in the CAA standings with UNCW (33-19, 14-8 CAA) and Elon (33-21, 14-8 CAA), while Northeastern (32-17, 16-6 CAA) pulls two games ahead with two to play. Charleston pushed across five runs on 10 hits – including two for extra bags – while the Seahawks plated six runs on 10 base knocks.
Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.), Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.), and Clay Hunt (Fort Mill, S.C.) each collected two hits for the Cougars, while Sechopoulos drove in three with a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth. Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) picked up his 40th RBI of the season with a sixth-inning single. McRae became the 30th player in program history to reach the 100 RBI plateau with a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth.
Evan Sisk (Chester, S.C.) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six in a five-inning no-decision. Carter Love (Charlotte, N.C.) surrendered one run on two base knocks in one and one-third, while Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) took the loss after allowing two tallies in one and two-thirds innings.
Mason Berne paced the Seahawks with a 3-for-5 night, including a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth. Ryan Jeffers added a game-tying solo shot as part of a 2-for-3 night, as Kep Brown, Cole Weiss, and Doug Angeli each drove in one run.
Alex Royalty surrendered four runs and struck out five in five and two-thirds innings of work. Austin Easter pitched one and one-third scoreless innings, while Austin Warren allowed one run on two hits and a walk in one frame. Henry Ryan tossed a shutout ninth to earn the win.
The Cougars and Seahawks will meet in game two of the series tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm, with Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) taking the ball for The College.
