HARRISONBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team couldn't find the equalizer in the second half as James Madison prevailed, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action.
After a handball inside the box by the Dukes (1-2-1, 1-1-0 CAA), the Cougars (0-7-1, 0-2-1 CAA) were awarded a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
Sophomore forward Grace Powell drilled the ball past JMU goalkeeper Melissa Hoffheins to record her first goal of the season and third of her career.
In the 24th minute, Ginger Deel would score the game-tying goal. Nine minutes later, teammate Hannah Coulling pulled the Dukes ahead on a goal assisted by Deel and Ebony Wiseman in the 33rd minute.
The Cougars outshot JMU, 4-0, in the second half, behind scoring attempts by Powell, Olivia Freitas, Hannah Stanhope and Leah Deutsch. But, none were on frame.
"It was a frustrating afternoon for the Cougars today," CofC Head Coach Christian Michner said. "We continue to play well and create chances, but cannot put them away. We had 3-to-4 opportunities to win the game and didn't. It's a tough pill to swallow to play well game-after-game, but not scoring goals has been our undoing. We will head back out to work on it again this week in preparation for a great Senior Day on Saturday."
CofC will close out the regular season at home against Elon on Senior Day slated for Saturday, April 3 at 6 p.m. (ET) at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The game will be broadcast on FloSports.
