
Women's Basketball Defeats Monmouth

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston fought hard against Monmouth for a 70-65 victory on Friday night at TD Arena.
The Cougars moved to 8-8, with a CAA record of 3-3. Monmouth dropped to 8-10, with a CAA record of 3-4.
Jada Logan led Charleston with 27 points with a second game in a row with 20-plus. Following behind her were Anika McGarity at 13 and Jaila Roberts at 11. Adaora Onwumelu pulled down 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
Ariana Vanderhoop with a double-double, 14 points, and 11 rebounds. Followed behind her were Brianna Tinsley and Lucy Thomas with 13 points.
Charleston will wrap up their home stand against William & Mary on Sunday, January 22, with tip-off at 2 p.m.
How It Happened
- Both Charleston and Monmouth were back and forth for most of the first quarter of play.
- With just under four minutes left in the first, Charleston led by one with a score of 6-5.
- Charleston broke away with a 7-4 run with two minutes left in the first.
- To end the first, McGarity dropped a buzzer-beater of a three to put Charleston ahead by four with a score of 18-14.
- Monmouth would have a 6-0 run for four minutes into the second quarter.
- Jazmyn Stone dropped a three at 6:38 to break the run, which brought Charleston on top by a score of 23-20.
- After a few back-and-forth lead changes, Monmouth took a four-point lead at 3:27 by a score of 29-25.
- Charleston picked up four free throws to bring them within two before the end of the second with a score of 33-31.
- Monmouth struck first in the third, but Alexis Andrews dropped a three to start the third for Charleston, which cut Monmouth's lead to one.
- Charleston picked up momentum on a 7-2 run at 7:24, which brought Charleston on top with a score of 38-37.
- Monmouth fought back for the lead with a 6-3 run, with Monmouth on top 41-40.
- Charleston tied up the score 43-43 with a three-pointer by Jaila Roberts at 4:23 in the third.
- Monmouth took one-point lead with 1:33 left.
- Onwumelu made a lay-up for Charleston to finish the third on top by a score of 48-47.
- Charleston jumped to a 6-3 run in the fourth.
- After Monmouth evened it up at 7:12 by a score of 53-53, the Hawks would not see a lead for the remainder of the game.
