
Baseball Entertains No. 14 Virginia Tech to Open 2023 Season

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston opens the 2023 season with No. 14 Virginia Tech, who came within one win of the 2022 College World Series. The Hokies finished 45-14 last season winning their first ACC Coastal crown reaching as high as No. 2 in the polls during the regular season.
Big things are expected of the Cougars in 2023 after capturing the program's second CAA regular season title last year finishing 37-20 overall and 19-5 in league play. Charleston was picked to finish first in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll while seven student-athletes were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Junior reliever William Privette has racked up preseason accolades left and right being named to four All-American teams via NCBWA (First Team), D1Baseball (Second Team), Collegiate Baseball (Second Team) and Perfect Game (Third Team). Privette led the nation in ERA (0.91), hits allowed per nine innings (4.70) and WHIP (0.78) while sitting among the top-10 in saves with 12.
This weekend is the first meeting in Charleston since March 9, 1993 when Virginia Tech defeated the Cougars 5-3 in a single midweek game. The Cougars took the last meeting 8-3 in 2015 on their way to a 45-win season and appearance in the Tallahassee Regional.
