Charleston Begins CAA Play in Williamsburg Versus the Tribe

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball hits the road for the first time in 2023 as they open CAA play with William & Mary for the second time in three seasons. Last season the Cougars swept the Tribe at Patriots Point 7-2, 4-3 and 7-5 including a Cam Dean walkoff single in the ninth in the Saturday contest.
 
During Charleston's eight-game win streak the offense has come alive scoring an average of 8.5 runs per game reaching double figures in four of those wins.
 
A handful of Cougars have been on fire during the win streak as Luke Wood has a hit in 10-straight, Joseph Mershon has reached safely in all 12 contests, Cole Mathis has raised his average to .357 hitting 6 doubles over the last four games and Will Baumhofer is hitting .382 with four extra-base hits.
 
Charleston sits second in the CAA in team batting average (.305) third in on-base percentage (.395) and second in slugging (.495). On the mound, the Cougars pace the league in opponents' batting average (.212) and saves (4) and sit second in ERA (3.67).
 
William & Mary enters the weekend 7-6 overall playing a tightly-contested 7-3 setback at No. 17 Virginia on Tuesday. The Tribe is 6-2 at Plumeri Park this season with a sweep of Marist and wins over Richmond, Old Dominion and Canisius. Ben Williamson and Joe Delossantos both went deep in the loss to the Cavaliers Tuesday and pace the Tribe with two long balls each.
 
Scouting the Tribe
  • Five batters for William & Mary are above .300 on the season led by Preseason All-CAA member Ben Williamson's .420 average on 21 hits, 14 runs, two home runs and 11 RBI. Lucas Carmichael (.353) and Joe Delossantos (.345) are also hitting above .340 and have combined for 31 hits and eight doubles.
  • As a team, William & Mary is hitting .284 (T-6th in the CAA) scoring 109 runs and stolen 25 bases.
  • The Tribe's Friday starter Nate Knowles has yet to allow an earned run over his first four appearances tossing 12.0 innings and striking out 13 hitters. Sunday starter Owen Pierce is 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA tossing 12.1 innings across four appearances.
  • William & Mary leads the CAA with a 3.36 Team ERA and sits second behind Charleston with a .232 opponent batting average.

Series History
  • Charleston has won the last eight meetings against the Tribe dating back to March 2021 with a sweep in last season's three-game set from Patriots Point and sweeping William & Mary in a three-game road set last in 2021.
  • Charleston enters the weekend with a 23-11 advantage in the series thanks to the current 8-game streak – the longest for either side in a series that dates to 2014 when Charleston joined the CAA.
  • The Cougars have taken seven of the regular season series since joining the CAA with William & Mary taking a series in 2017 and 2019, both via a sweep in Williamsburg.
  • The Cougars and Tribe have also met six times in the CAA Tournament with Charleston holding a 4-2 advantage in those meetings.
