CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team swept their doubleheader with South Carolina State Wednesday afternoon by scores of 5-4 and 1-0.
After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second frame, the Cougars responded with a five-hit third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Karlee Hughes drove in the first two runs with a bases-loaded two-out single. Malaka Belser and Mia Dittoe each followed up with an RBI of their own.Â
The Bulldogs added one run each in the fourth and fifth frames, and a Cougar error in the top of the seventh allowed the tying run to score.
Shealyn Starks singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on an error. Hughes then walked it off with a double to left field, bringing home Starks to finish the game 3-4 with 3 RBI.
McKenna Kelly picked up the win, matching her career-best four strikeouts across four innings.
Lauren Sandor entered the circle for game two and picked up her first win of the season, pitching a complete game behind a season-best six strikeouts. The junior only allowed three hits in the shutout.
Aniz Roman tripled in the fifth frame, but the Cougars could not get the run across.
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth with two outs and a runner on second. Ella Campbell hit a pop fly to the infield, but the ball dropped, allowing Kelli Anne Carter to score the winning run.
