Charleston Opens 2023 CAA Tournament with Fifth-Seeded Delaware

CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 4 seed College of Charleston opens the 2023 CAA Championships with fifth-seeded Delaware in the first game of the tournament Wednesday at Noon.

Charleston plays host for the 2023 CAA Championships as UNCW, Elon, Northeastern, Delaware and William & Mary head to Patriots Point. Third seed Northeastern takes on No. 6 William & Mary in the Wednesday finale while top seed UNCW and second seed Elon get first round byes to Thursday afternoon and night.
Charleston last hosted the CAA Championships in 2016 grabbing a pair of wins over No. 3 Elon and No. 2 William & Mary. The Cougars are 14-14 all-time in the CAA Tournament picking up multiple wins in five of their eight appearances.
Five Cougars earned All-CAA honors on Tuesday with Ty Good being named the 2023 CAA Pitcher of the Year – the second time in as many seasons the Cougars have the Pitcher of the Year.
William Privette was named a first team reliever, Cole Mathis and Luke Wood were named second team infielders and Trotter Harlan was named a second team outfielder.

Scouting the Blue Hens
- Delaware finished the 2023 CAA season 17-13 and 29-27 overall – a nine-game improvement inside league play from 2022. The Blue Hens took six series inside CAA play including a three-game set in Newark against Charleston to open the month of April.
- Delaware was led offensively by their redshirt-junior All-CAA third baseman Joey Loynd who hit .392 with 26 doubles, 14 home runs and drove in 79 runs.
- Loynd was one of three Blue Hens to earn All-Conference nods alongside JJ Freeman on the first team and Bryce Greenly on the second team.
- Wednesday's probably starter Joey Silan finished the regular season 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA pacing the Blue Hen staff. Silan tossed 73 innings striking out 54 and collecting one save. In the regular season series, Silan tossed six scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out seven in the Saturday game.

Series History vs. Delaware
- Charleston leads the overall series with Delaware 21-9 after the Blue Hens swept the regular season series in Newark. The series was the first sweep for Delaware over the Cougars and just their second series win over the 30-game history.
- Charleston and Delaware have met three times in the CAA Tournament with the Blue Hens holding a 2-1 advantage. Charleston won the initial meeting in 2015 before Delaware grabbed wins in 2017 and 2018.
- Delaware's sweep in Newark snapped a six-game streak from the Cougars, the longest win streak by either side in the series. Charleston also has two five-game win streaks since joining the CAA prior to the 2014 season.
