Cougars Win in Straight Sets Again

WILMINGTON, N.C. – For the fourth straight match, College of Charleston won in straight sets, defeating UNCW (26-24, 25-21 and 25-19) Sunday afternoon in Hanover Hall.
 
Charleston improves to 21-8 overall and 13-3 in the CAA, while UNCW falls to 7-16 and 4-12 in league play.
 
Caitlyn Callahan once again dominated, hitting .706 with 12 kills on 17 attempts. Emily Banitt (14 kills) and Emily Dykes (7 kills) also helped the Cougars hit .306 as a team. 
 
 
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED:
  • Tied at 18 in the third set, Hannah Scott tallied her lone kill of the day, beginning a 7-1 run for the Cougars to close out the match.
 
   
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST UNCW:
  • Charleston improved to 20-1 when out-hitting opponents.
  • The Cougars hit .387 in the second set, recording just two attack errors.
  • Avery Alexander led the defense with 10 digs and was one-of-five Cougars with six-plus digs in the victory.
  • Hannah Scott had 31 assists and six digs. Scott has 30-plus assists in 19 contests this season.
  • Banitt tallied a service ace tying her for the team lead at 31 with Tynley Smeltzer.
 
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston improves to 32-11 overall versus UNCW and 13-3 in three-set matches.
  • The Cougars have won 15 of the last 16 contests against the Seahawks.
  • Charleston played just its third Sunday match of the season, improving to 2-1.
  • Seven of the Cougars last eight wins have been in three sets.
  • Banitt recorded her 1,400th career kill in the fourth set.
  • Callahan is tied with Krissy Mummey (2014) for the ninth-most solo blocks in a season in the Rally-Scoring Era with 24.
  • Smeltzer is now 20 digs away from becoming the eighth player in program history to reach 1,500 career digs.
 
 
UP NEXT:
Charleston concludes the regular season at home with a series against Northeastern beginning Friday, Nov. 16. Both matches in TD Arena are scheduled for 1 p.m. with the team celebrating 50 seasons. Charleston's senior class will be honored before Saturday's match in a pregame ceremony.
