CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston baseball welcomes old Southern Conference foe Wofford to Patriots Point for a three game series this weekend. The Cougars and Terriers met often in the SoCon but this will be the first series since 2013. The two programs met for midweek games in 2021 and 2023 with Wofford winning both contests. The series begins Friday at 4:00 p.m. with Saturday's game time scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and Sunday's contest at 1:00 p.m.
Last Time Out
Charleston stumbled in the midweek at home against Charleston Southern. The Bucs rallied from 2-0 down to lead 7-2 late. Homers by Avery Neaves and Luke Wood cut the deficit but CSU hung on for a 7-5 win. Before hosting the Bucs, Charleston won a three game series with Penn at Patriots, taking the first two games before dropping the finale. The Cougs came back from a 5-1 hole in game one against the Quakers to win 11-5. A 7-4 Charleston win followed in game two before the Quakers used a three run, two out rally in the ninth of game three to win 6-5.
Scouting the Terriers
Wofford has gotten off to a bright start in 2024 in the first season under head coach J.J. Edwards. The Terriers sit at 12-2 on the year, sweeping series with Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham and Lafayette. Wofford also picked up a pair of wins over CAA-foe Towson to start the season. Wofford comes to Patriots Point with the nation's best batting average (.383), on-base percentage (.505) and runs per game (13.8). Those numbers are in large part thanks to high-scoring sweeps of Fordham and Lafayette in the team last six games. In game two against Fordham, Wofford posted a new program record 29 runs. The Terriers followed up by out scoring Lafayette 57-8 over three games.
Dixon Black is the reigning SoCon player of the week. Black leads the team in hitting (.463), hits (25), doubles (5), triples (3) and RBI (26). Toole sits just behind Black in average (.462) but does hold team leads in homers (4), slugging percentage (.808), walks (14), on-base percentage (.582) and stolen bases (15). His 15 swipes also leads the nation. In total, Wofford's usual starting nine are all hitting .333 or higher.
Wofford's pitching staff has also started strong with Braden Hofmeyer leading the way. Hofmeyer enters the weekend 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA and was name SoCon Pitcher of the Week two week prior, striking out six batters in 5.0 innings pitched.
