
Baseball Travels to Stony Brook for CAA Series

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball hits the road this weekend to take on Stony Brook in CAA conference play. This will be the Cougars first series away from Patriots Point on the season. Charleston enters the weekend with a 14-9 overall record and 1-2 mark in CAA play. Stony Brook sits at 12-12 on the year, also 1-2 in conference play.
Last Time Out
The Cougars suffered a 13-3 run-rule defeat at Georgia Southern on Tuesday. After Will Baumhofer opened the game with a solo homer, the Eagles immediately took over the lead and never looked back. Charleston trailed 10-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh when the hosts plated three to end the game.
Scouting Stony Brook
The Seawolves picked up a pair of wins in the midweek, knocking off Iona and Fordham. They took on William & Mary in Williamsburg to start CAA play last weekend, dropping a both games of a double-header on Saturday. Stony Brook rebounded with a 12-3 win to wrap up the series. The Seawolves have played three different power five opponents on the year. They opened up the season with Purdue in February, losing three of four before splitting a pair of games with eighth ranked LSU. Stony Brook also played a series at #13 Virginia Tech earlier in March, winning one of three.
The Seawolves offense is led by a pair of .300 hitters. Matt Brown-Eiring enters the weekend with a .366 average, leading the team in doubles with nine, RBI (17) and slugging percentage (.516). Erik Paulsen is sitting at .333 on the year with a team high three homers.
Eddie Smink leads the Stony Brook arms with a 3.03 ERA, sitting at 2-3 on the year with 40 strikeouts in 32.2 innings. The sophomore right-hander has eight-plus strikeouts in his last three starts including 12 against Siena. Nicholas Rizzo sits at 2-2 with a 3.19 ERA. After surrendering eight earned runs against Purdue at the start of the season, Rizzo has allowed just five earned in the last 32 innings pitched.
