CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston plays the first of a home-and-home set against city rival The Citadel when the teams meet Tuesday at Riley Park at 4 p.m.
The Cougars (28-10, 12-3 CAA) have won a season-high eight in a row and 14 of their last 15 including a sweep of William & Mary last weekend. The 3-0 victory on Sunday was the 1,100th since the baseball program was resumed in 1991.
The three wins over the Tribe pulled Charleston into a first-place tie in the CAA with UNCW. The Cougars are 18 games over .500 in April for the first time since 2018 and are two wins shy of reaching the 30 plateau for the 20th time in the past 22 full seasons.
The Cougars hold a 58-42 lead in the series against their former Southern Conference rival and have won 20 of the past 21 meetings. The teams will meet again at Patriots Point on May 7.
In the only matchup a year ago, Charleston won, 15-4, at Patriots Point. Tyler Sorrentino had four hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs to lead a 16-hit attack. Trotter Harlan homered and drove in three runs.
The Cougar pitching staff brings a stretch of 20 consecutive scoreless innings into Tuesday's contest to rise to third in the nation in team ERA at 3.48. Charleston is also second in the NCAA in shutouts with six and third in walks allowed per nine innings at 2.90.
Bishop England graduate Daniel Brooks will start for the Cougars. Brooks had his best outing since returning to action from elbow surgery before the 2023 season when he allowed only one hit and struck out six in four innings against Charleston Southern last Tuesday.
