Northeastern Rallies Past Cougars in Series Opener

The Cougars (34-12, 16-5 CAA) lost for only the third time in their past 18 conference games and dropped one and a half games behind UNCW in the race for the regular season championship.
Cole Singsank hit two home runs for the second consecutive game, including a three-run shot in the seventh that gave Charleston a 10-4 lead. The Huskies (34-13, 15-7) scored three in the eighth and then tied it in the ninth on two solo home runs and a sacrifice fly.
The teams traded runs in the 10th, and the Cougars had the bases loaded with one out but could not push across the winning run. After a scoreless 11th, Alex Lane doubled in three runs in the decisive 12th inning.
The top two offensive teams in the CAA combined for 41 hits, including a season-high 20 for the Cougars. Avery Neaves continued his hot hitting with two doubles and a triple, giving him 11 extra-base hits in the past three CAA contests. Will Baumhofer, Trotter Harlan and Dylan Johnson each had three hits while Singsank drove in four runs.
The Cougars jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings, highlighted by a two-run double by Neaves in the third. Charleston still led 6-4 in the sixth when Singsank hit home runs in back-to-back innings to build a seemingly comfortable six-run cushion.
The Cougars will look to even the series with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday.
