WILMINGTON, N.C. – College of Charleston fell behind by six runs in the first inning and could not complete a comeback in an 8-5 loss to UNCW at the CAA Tournament at Brooks Field in Wilmington.
The top-seeded Cougars (40-13) lost for only the fourth time in their past 30 games and will face No. 4 Delaware in an elimination contest at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will have to beat the host No. 2 Seahawks twice tomorrow beginning at noon to claim the conference title.
The Seahawks bunched together five singles and a sacrifice fly in the first before Cougar pitching limited them to three hits the rest of the way. Charleston twice got within two but fell short in its bid to overcome a six-run deficit for the second time in as many tournament games.
The Cougars scored four times in the third on a two-run double by Cole Mathis, his third two-base hit of the tournament, and sacrifice flies by Cole Singsank and Kevin Madden. The teams traded runs in the fifth, with a Madden solo homer making it a 7-5 game.
That would prove to be the final Charleston run as the UNCW bullpen stymied the Cougar bats on only two singles the rest of the way.
Jake Brink settled down after the first inning, allowing two runs on two hits over his next four frames. The Charleston bullpen took over in the sixth and kept the Cougars in the game with Hayden Thomas working a scoreless sixth, and Alex Lyon turning in three innings of no-hit ball.
