
Strong Shooting Powers Charleston Past Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – Powered by the third best shooting performance in program history, the College of Charleston women's basketball team (12-3, 4-0) earned an 88-75 road win at Hampton (7-8, 1-2) at the Convocation Center Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-0 in CAA play for the first time in program history. The 4-0 start is tied for the best start to conference play in program history. Charleston previously began conference play 4-0 in both the 1996-97 season (TAAC) and the 2009-10 season (SoCon).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Led by Sophia Tougas' five early points, CofC jumped out to an early 13-9 lead at the first media timeout.
- Back-to-back Cougar triples from Jami Hill and Leah Philpotts put Charleston up 10 with 3:13 left in the first period.
- Still holding a double-digit advantage at the start of the second quarter, CofC opened the period on a 12-4 spurt to take a 38-20 advantage with 4:51 left in the half.
- The squads traded buckets for the remainder of the half as Charleston took a 48-31 edge into the locker room.
- Opening the second half where they left off, the Cougars scored 18 points by the third quarter media timeout as they increased their lead to 23 (66-43).
- CofC held a 70-53 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
- Hampton went on a 6-0 run to make it a 13 point game (79-66) in favor of Charleston with 5:03 to play.
- In the final five minutes, the Pirates came within 11, but the Cougars went on to win the contest 88-75 as they improved to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
- Junior Taylor Barbot dished out a season-high 11 assists to go along with nine points.
- Junior Taryn Barbot scored 12 points while adding five rebounds and four assists.
- Junior Tyja Beans set a new career-high with 24 points as she went 10-for-11 (.909) from the field. She also added six rebounds and scored her 700th career point Sunday afternoon.
- Junior Grace Ezebilo collected her 900th career rebound as she grabbed six boards and scored six points against Hampton.
- Junior Jami Hill went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc as she contributed nine points.
- Sophomore Leah Philpotts added 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.
- Redshirt senior Sophia Tougas added 11 points with three triples. She also collected her 100th career assist.
- CofC shot 59% from the field and 45.8% from beyond the arc, while Hampton shot 51.8% on the game and just 33.3% from three.
- Charleston outrebounded Hampton 29-25.
- The Cougars outscored the Pirates 40-34 in the paint.
- CofC made 11 triples compared to Hampton's five.
- Tyja Beans set a career-high with 24 points and scored her 700th career point.
- Grace Ezebilo collected her 900th career rebound.
- Charleston shot 59% from the field, which is tied for the third best shooting performance in program history.
- CofC is now 4-2 all-time against Hampton, and the Cougars have won four in a row against the Pirates.
