Sweeney Shines in Friday Win

The Cougars improve to 23-25 overall and 13-12 in the CAA while the Phoenix fall to 19-29 and 10-18 in league action.
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST ELON:
- Redshirt junior Braeden Smith got the scoring going in the second, tripling in redshirt Ethan Plyler from first.
- Plyler drove in a pair in the third with a two-out double, giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.
- Graduate Will Tippett launched a two-run homer in the fourth, his fifth of the year.
- Tied at five through seven, Tippett brought in the winning run in the top of the eight on a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Nick Diaz.
- Plyler went 2-for-4 in the victory, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Plyler has multi-hit performances in six of those contests.
- Redshirt senior Alex Lyon made his 97th career relief appearance, tossing 3.1 innings.
- Sweeney entered, tossing the final 2.2 of the ballgame, allowing just one hit.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston is now 48-33 versus Elon and 19-12 on the road.
- Sweeney has struck out five in back-to-back outings. The southpaw also yielded just one hit in 2.0 scoreless at UNCW May 3.
- CofC drew seven walks Friday, the ninth time with at least seven in a game this season.
