Trey Meyer is in his first season as Director of Recruiting / Player Development for the College of Charleston men’s basketball program.
“Trey is the consummate professional,” CofC Head Coach Earl Grant said. “He has a unique blend of experiences that will allow him to make a significant impact on our program. We are really excited to have Trey and his wife, Ashley, and their two daughters join our basketball family.”
Meyer most recently served as an assistant coach at Furman University under head coach Bob Richey. Last season, he helped the Paladins set a school record with 23 wins. Meyer worked primarily with the post players including All-Southern Conference player Matt Rafferty.
“My family and I are thrilled to join the College of Charleston men’s basketball program under head coach Earl Grant,” he said. “We fully believe in his plan to develop young men on-and-off the court. We are honored to be a part of the College of Charleston Family and look forward to helping build upon the success of the program.”
Prior to Furman, he spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Miami (Ohio) University men’s basketball program. Meyer was the lead recruiter on numerous signees including 1,000-career point scorer and all-conference selection Geovonie McKnight in addition to 2017 MAC Freshman of the Year Michael Weathers.
He also was a member of head coach John Cooper’s staff at Tennessee State for three seasons, spending two years as a graduate assistant (2009-11) and one season as the director of operations (2011-12). He helped TSU to a 20-13 record in 2011-12, the program’s first winning record since 1995-96 and the Tigers’ first 20-win season in 32 years.
The team knocked off No. 7-ranked Murray State, 72-68, on Feb. 9, 2012 – one of just two losses for the Racers that season and defeated their first SEC opponent when the Tigers upset South Carolina, 64-63. TSU nearly earned a NCAA Tournament berth falling to Murray State by two points in the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The Tigers would earn a bid to the 2012 CIT.
Cooper brought Meyer with him to Miami (Ohio), where he was actively involved in the player development of the RedHawks. He also played an active part in recruiting and oversaw the development of the RedHawks’ wing players.
In 2010, Meyer co-founded the Rising Coaches Elite Organization, which is designed to help NCAA Division I men’s basketball support staff members become assistant coaches. The organization has boasted over 120 attendees the past few years, while highlighting speakers from across the country.
Meyer is a former student-athlete and played at Erskine College before transferring to Clemson. There, he served as a student assistant for three seasons. The Tigers won 72 games during his time at Clemson and made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
A native of North Augusta, S.C., Meyer earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Clemson in 2009 and a master’s degree in sports administration from Tennessee State in 2011. He and his wife, Ashley, reside in Charleston and have two daughters, Paisley and Olive.
