With the win, Charleston improves to 10-1 in league play and 16-6 overall. Elon drops to 13-12 and 7-4 in the SoCon with the loss. “I was disappointed in the way the team played tonight after coming off such a strong showing last week at home,” said Coach Jason Kepner. “Elon played very well and was the aggressor tonight and we are very lucky to escape with a five-game win.” The Pheonix opened game one with a 6-1 lead and held at least a two-point advantage through the entire game. Brittany Westphal led the game with 10 kills as the Pheonix took an early 1-0 match advantage over Charleston. Charleston rebounded in games two and three to lead the match 2-1. The Cougars held Elon to a .051 and .064 team hitting percentage in each game. Charleston rallied from a 13-6 deficit in game two by going on a 6-0 run to narrow Elon's lead to 13-12. A kill by Whitney Russell tied the game at 17. The game was tied again at 20 after the Cougars forced two attack errors by Elon. The second game would see five more ties before Charleston sealed it, 30-28, off a kill by Emily Sawin. In game three Charleston took an early 12-3 lead before Elon rallied to make it a 16-11 game. A 5-0 Elon run brought the score to 24-22 before Charleston scored on six of its final 10 possessions to take the game, 30-26. Elon rebounded in game four, notching 17 kills and a posting a .405 team hitting percentage to force a fifth game. The fourth game saw the two teams tie 10 times before Elon was able to shut down the Cougar offense. Three consecutive points by the Cougars late in the game narrowed Elon's lead to 29-21 but it would not be enough as Elon took game four 30-21. Charleston overpowered the Pheonix in the final game of the match, as Tiffany Blum posted four kills (.600) and a block assist to lead CofC to the match-sealing 15-12 win. The Cougar offense, led by Patrick, was sparked by a 15-kill performance from Blum and paced by Lindsey Kane with her 52 assists. Sawin earned a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs on the night. Annie Uthe, Cole Dawley, Kane, and Russell combined for 25 kills, while Megan Parkerson recorded four service aces in the win. Uthe led the Cougar defense with one solo block and six assisted blocks. Parkerson tallied 16 digs. Westphal led Elon with a match-high 29 kills with Jessica Barrow and Emily Lucci earning double-doubles with 16 kills/10 digs and 14 kills/17 digs, respectively. Lauren Copenhagen recorded eight blocks with Sarah Schermerhorn and Lucci combining for 13 blocks.
