Jermaine Johnson had his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Tony White, Jr. added 17 points to lead College of Charleston to a 79-70 win over Charleston Southern in men's college basketball action before 3,721 at North Charleston Coliseum on Wednesday.
With the win, Charleston improved to 3-3 on the season. Charleston Southern fell to 3-4. The Cougars open Southern Conference play at Western Carolina at 7 p.m on Saturday.
The Cougars shot 59.4 percent in the second half hitting 19-of-32 from the field to erase a 29-26 deficit. Chris Moore led CSU with 12 points in the first half.
White sparked Charleston's 53-point second half by scoring all of his points after intermission. White's two assists and 3-pointer helped Charleston to a 15-5 run to start the second half for a 41-34 Cougars' lead with 16:16 left.
After the Bucs cut the margin to 45-43 on a jumper by Quinton Goods, Charleston answered with an 11-2 run capped by Jeremy Simmons' dunk and free throw for a 56-45 lead with 11:49 left.
Johnson, who came within a point of his career-high effort of 22 points against Wofford last season, hit 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-10 free throws. Dustin Scott added 10 points for the Cougars.
Charleston Southern got 21 points from Jamarco Warren and 15 points from Moore. Goods added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Buccaneers.
For the game, CSU held a 49-44 rebounding edge. Charleston had 11 turnovers, just four in the second half.
The game also marked the 800th in the career of Cougar coach Bobby Cremins. Cremins improved his 27-year career mark to 479-321.
