Khalil Hartwell scored 19 points and added 11 rebounds while teammate Stephen McDowell added 15 points as Chattanooga downed the College of Charleston, 86-70, in Southern Conference men's college basketball action before 3,681 at McKenzie Arena on Saturday.
With the win, the Mocs improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in league play. Charleston, which plays at Florida State at 7:00 on Tuesday, fell to 4-4 and 1-1.
Hartwell scored 10 points, while McDowell added eight as the Mocs led 39-28 at halftime. The Cougars, who closed the half on a 20-9 run, got six points each from Antwaine Wiggins and Andrew Goudelock.
The Cougars, who trailed 30-8 with 8:25 left in the first half, opened the second half with a 35-26 run to cut the margin to 65-63 on a 3-pointer by Tony White, Jr. with 7:35 left. Hartwell's dunk just 20 second later ignited a 14-0 run by the Mocs and a 79-63 advantage.
"Chattanooga played very well tonight and deserved to win," said Charleston coach Bobby Cremins, whose team set a school-record attempting 39 3-pointers, hitting on 10. "We did not play well early, but we hung in there and cut the lead to two in the second half and I thought we really had a chance. We're a very young but talented team that's learning as we go. I like this team because we really have potential."
Five Charleston players scored in double figures led by White's 12 points. Goudelock had 11 points, while Jermaine Johnson, Jeremy Simmons and Wiggins added 10 points each.
The Mocs got 12 points each from Marcus Watts and Kevin Bridgewaters.
