
Draper, CofC Down UNCG 81-59

Dontaye Draper's career-high and team-record tying eight three-pointers for a game-high 28 points lifted the College of Charleston men's basketball team to a crucial 81-59 victory over UNC Greensboro before 1,572 at the Fleming Gym in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday.
The victory improves CofC's record to 17-8 overall and 10-3 in the SoCon, while the loss drops UNC Greensboro to 12-12 with a SoCon record of 9-5.
For the first half, Charleston shot 47.6 percent (10-21) from the field and made four out of 10 three-pointers for a 40.0 percent clip. UNC Greensboro shot 27.8 percent (10-36) from the field and made only three out of fifteen threes to gain a 20.0 percent result. UNC Greensboro held a 28-25 lead going into halftime.
Charleston outscored UNC Greensboro 56-31 in the second half to earn the victory. In the second half, CofC shot a season-high 66.7 percent (20-30) for a half, including making 11-16 three-pointers. UNC Greensboro managed to make 40.6 percent (13-32) of its field goals in the half and make 5-17 threes.
For the game, the Cougars shot a season-high 58.8 percent (30-51), including making 15 three-pointers, which is one off of the team record set at Chattanooga on Feb. 22, 2003. UNC Greensboro shot 33.8 (23-68) from the field and made eight three-pointers. Charleston grabbed more rebounds than Greensboro, 38-29, and notched more assists, 16-9. Charleston committed 21 turnovers in the game, while Greensboro had 14. CofC made six out of nine free-throws, while UNC Greensboro made five out of six.
Draper's eight three-pointers in Saturday's game tied the CofC record for most threes in a game held by Troy Wheless, which was accomplished on Feb. 25, 2003 at Davidson. David Lawrence scored 13 points for the Cougars, while Tony White, Jr. and Josh Jackson scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Lawrence also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and tied a career-high for assists with six for the Cougars.
Ricky Hickman led UNC Greensboro in scoring with 19 points and also grabbed five rebounds. Kyle Hines scored 11 points and had a team-high seven rebounds for the Spartans.
Both teams return to action on Feb. 12, when the Cougars will face Davidson at the John Kresse Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. and the Spartans will face Elon at the Fleming Gym beginning at 7:30 p.m.
