Chris Campbell belted two homers and Nick Chigges pitched six strong innings leading College of Charleston to an 11-5 win over Davidson in the opener of its three-games Southern Conference series before 233 rain-soaked fans at Patriots Point Field on Thursday.
Charleston, which remains in a first place tie with Western Carolina with two games left in the regular season, improved to 38-16 overall and 19-6 in league play. Davidson fell to 18-32 and 7-18. Both teams weathered a 1-hour, 40-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning. The series concludes with a doubleheader at 3:00 on Friday. WCU beat Georgia Southern, 4-1.
Davidson grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead. After Alden Crissey singled and Rob Wilson walked with two outs, Blake Osborn drove in Crissey for the game's first run with a single to center.
Oliver Marol tied the game at 1-1 when he led off the bottom of the first with his seventh homer of the season down the left field line. Campbell's first homer was a one-out solo shot to left in the first that gave Charleston a 2-1 lead. Campbell's second solo homer was his 10th of the season and came with two outs in the fourth to extend Charleston's lead to 6-2.
Michael Harrington's 11th homer of the season was a three-run blast to right in the sixth that gave Charleston a 9-2 advantage.
Davidson's Zach Kayne belted a three-run homer in the ninth, his sixth of the season, for the final margin.
Chigges (11-0) picked up the win working the first six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on just four hits with six strikeouts. Mike Lynn worked the final three innings for his second save of the season. Rob Wilson (2-9) suffered the loss surrendering seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts over the first five innings.

- Charleston scored at least 10 runs in a game for a school-record 24th time ... the old mark was 23 set in 2005 ...
- Nick Chigges recorded his 109th strikeout of the season ... he tied the school single-season mark set by Donato Calandriello in 1998.
- The Cougars belted four homers for a school-record eighth time this season.
