Emily Sawin had 11 kills and Tiffany Blum hitting a .467 (8-15) in the 3-0 shutout (30-18, 30-14, 30-21) of the Davidson Wildcats in SoCon action. With the win, Charleston improved to 9-5 on the season, while remaining perfect in the SoCon with a 4-0 record. Davidson fell to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in league play.
“We played great volleyball tonight,” Coach Jason Kepner said. “Games one and two went well but we started out a little slowly in game three. We got back on track and finished well. We have been working hard all week in practice to improve and it showed tonight.”
The Cougars opened the match with an 8-2 run which forced Davidson to call an early timeout. CofC scored the next two points off of an attack error by Davidson's Kittery Neal and a kill by Sawin. Davidson narrowed CofC's lead to 18-10, but that would be the closest the Wildcats would come. CofC took the game 30-18 off a kill by Sawin.
CofC scored first in game two, but Davidson answered with a point of their own. The scored remained within four until senior Deanna Patrick had two kills in a row to expand Charleston's lead to 15-9. Charleston went on a 6-0 run to widen their lead to 23-11, causing Davidson to take another timeout. Davidson regrouped after allowing Charleston to score another point. Davidson then took the next point before the Cougars scored six of the next eight points to clinch game two with a score of 30-14.
The final game of the match saw Charleston fall behind 9-5 after Davidson's Neale had back-to-back kills. Charleston narrowed the lead until a kill by Sawin tied the game at 12. The teams traded points for seven possessions before Charleston put the match away with a 13-3 run which resulted in a 30-21 win.
Sawin was the only Cougar with double digit kills, but five more combined for 24 more. Senior setter Lindsey Kane hit a .600 (3-5) with 35 assists, a service ace, six digs, and one assisted block. Annie Uthe led the team defensively with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Cole Dawley led the team with 21 digs. As a team, Charleston had an attack percentage of .286.
Katie Pierucci led Davidson with 11 kills, while six others added kills in the effort. The team had a match leading three service aces by Pierucci, Jennifer Chamblee, and Lindsey Woeste. Woested paced Davidson defensively with 10 digs.
