
Women's Basketball Continues Home Slate with Elon

The College of Charleston women's basketball team attempts to open the Southern Conference season 2-0 for the first time since 2006-07 when the Cougars host Elon Monday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Carolina First Arena.
Charleston has split the first two conference games in each of its last two seasons. The Cougars opened 2006-07 with wins against Georgia Southern and Appalachian State before falling to Davidson.
The Cougars face the Elon Phoenix Monday before taking 12 days off for exams. Charleston is next in action when it travels to Furman Dec. 19th. CofC is 11-4 over Elon and has won the last four meetings, including a 68-42 decision Jan. 24, 2009. The last Elon victory was a 64-58 win Feb. 10, 2007.
Charleston is 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference after having defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 71-60, this past Saturday. The Cougars led by as much as 24 in the second half but had to hang on as a 22-6 run by the Spartans cut the margin to eight late in the game. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch and clutch three-pointers sealed the win for the Cougars, however. Ericka Williams (Blackville, S.C.) posted her second career double-double in the win, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Megan King (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tied her career-high with nine points in the effort. Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) and Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) led the team with 13 points apiece.
Elon is 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the league and has dropped the last three games. Most recently the Phoenix fell at Georgia Southern, 70-58. Leading the Phoenix is Ali Ford with 16.7 points a game, while Kelsey Evans paces the team in rebounds with 7.7 a game.
Charleston is led this season by Gerty, who has 13.1 points per game. Hughes follows with 11.9, while Jones leads the team in rebounds with 8.0 a game. The Cougar starters this season have accounted for 404 of the team's 512 points and of that, 200 have come from the duo of Gerty and Hughes.
In league statistics, Gerty is seventh in scoring, while Hughes is ninth. In rebounding, Jones is third in the league and Gerty leads in assists, with Hughes sixth.
Charleston is ranked third in the league in scoring offense and third in scoring defense, while Elon is 11th and ninth, respectively.
