
CofC Secures 20-win Season; Downs GSU, 81-68

Statesboro, Ga. -- Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) scored 18 points, while Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) equaled his career-high with 16 points, leading the College of Charleston to an 81-68 Southern Conference victory over Georgia Southern before 1,682 at Hanner Fieldhouse on Thursday.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 20-7 overall and 12-5 in league play. It marks the 22nd time over the past 30 seasons that Charleston has won at least 20 games. It was also the Cougars' first win at Georgia Southern since an 84-79 win on Feb. 14, 2003. The Eagles fell to 7-18 and 5-12. Charleston returns to action on Monday when they play at Chattanooga at 7:00 p.m.
Monroe tallied 10 points and Marcus Hammond (Memphis, Tenn.) hit a pair of 3-pointers during an 18-4 run that gave the Cougars a commanding 64-51 with 6:59 remaining in the game. Charleston hit their final four free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
For Charleston, Jermaine Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) added eight points and pulled down four rebounds while Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.), who scored six points and had a team-high eight rebounds.
Tyler Troupe led the Eagles with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Drayton added 16 points for Georgia Southern.
"Chalk up this victory to our bench," said Charleston coach Bobby Cremins. "Donavan Monroe, Jeremy Simmons, Matt Sundberg and Marcus Hammond. The bench made our starters play harder.
"It's great to win 20 games, but our goal is to play better and play like we did early on this season. We have three more regular season games to find our game before the SoCon Tournament."
