
Cougars Gear up for Monday Tilt against Mountaineers

The College of Charleston women's basketball team will put its perfect home record on the line Monday, Jan. 18 when the Cougars host Appalachian State in a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Cougars are 8-0 at the Carolina First Arena so far this season and 20-2 since the facility opened last year.
CofC is 16-13 over ASU and has won the last six of seven meetings, including a 57-55 decision Feb. 21, 2009.
Charleston is 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the league won its third in a row with the 84-78 victory over Davidson this past Saturday. Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) and Ericka Williams (Blackville, S.C.) both scored career-highs with Kotcella adding 27 points and Williams adding 25. Kotcella's 27 points is the most by a Cougar since Erica Irick scored 27 at Furman Feb. 12, 2005. It ranks in the top 15 in CofC Division I history.
Four Cougars are averaging in double-figures in scoring this season with Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) leading the way with 11.3 a game. Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) follows with 11.2 and with 10.8 a game, Kotcella is third and Williams is fourth with 10.3. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) leads the team in rebounds with 7.1 a game.
Charleston is third in scoring defense in the league and fourth in field goal percentage defense, as well as three-point field goal percentage. The Cougars are also second in assists and second in assist/turnover ratio as well as fourth in steals and turnover margin.
Appalachian State is 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the league. The Mountaineers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 72-57 win at UNC Greensboro this past Saturday. Ashlen Dewart, who had 22 points against the Spartans, leads the team with 16.2 points a game.
The Mountaineers are third in the Southern Conference in scoring offense with 66.1 points a game and first in FG percentage and field goal percentage defense. ASU is also second in rebounding offense and rebounding margin. Appalachian State also leads the league in blocked shots and assists.
