
Cougars Travel to Statesboro for Matchup with Eagles

The College of Charleston women's basketball team hopes to end a two-game skid when it travels to Statesboro, Ga., to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a 1 p.m. tip-off Jan. 9. The Eagles are 25-11 overall against Charleston, but the Cougars have won the last three contests, including a 63-43 decision in the last meeting.
Charleston is 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the league. CofC dropped its second SoCon game of the season, falling to Samford, 79-47, in its last match. Two Cougars have averaged in double-figure scoring during the two-game road trip. Ericka Williams (Blackville, S.C.) has scored in the teens in both games and is averaging 12.0 points per game, while Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) is at 11.0 a game.
Three Cougars are averaging in double-figures in scoring this season with Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) leading the way at 11.6. Gerty follows with 10.9, while Williams is at 10.0 in 14 games. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) leads the team in rebounds with 7.7 a game.
Georgia Southern is 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the league after dropping a 57-55 decision at Chattanooga Jan. 4. Carolyn Whitney leads the Eagles with 11.0 a game, with J'Lisia Ogburn following closely behind at 10.7 a game. She also paces the team with 4.9 rebounds a game.
Five Cougars are in the top 30 in scoring in the league, the most of any school. Hughes is 12th, while Gerty is 15th. Williams is tied for 19th, while Brooke Kotcella (Anderson, S.C.) is 22nd, Jones is 26th. Jones is fifth in rebounding and second in offensive rebounds. Gerty leads the league in assists and assist/turnover ratio, while Williams is third in three-point field goal percentage.
Charleston is third in scoring defense in the league and second in field goal percentage defense, as well as 3-pt field goal percentage. The Cougars are also second in assists and assist/turnover ratio.
