CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Facing their toughest competition of the spring season, the College of Charleston volleyball team rose to the occasion and played their best as they went 3-0-1, defeating Duke, Virginia Commonwealth and Furman and splitting with North Carolina at the Carolina Volleyball Spring Tournament on Sunday, April 11.
“I was very pleased this past weekend at UNC” said head coach Jason Kepner. “We played our toughest competition of the spring and played our best and most consistent volleyball this season. We played four very good teams starting with Duke. Winning that first game after being down 10-4 was the start of a very good day. We stayed at a high level longer than we had and fought all day”.
After trailing 10-4 in Game 1 against the Blue Devils, the Cougars rallied and notched a 29-27 victory before taking the match with a solid 25-16 decision in the second set. Coming off of that win, CofC swept Virginia Commonwealth by scores of 25-18 and 25-20 to move to 2-0 in the tournament before taking on a familiar foe in their third match.
That would be fellow Southern Conference member Furman, who went 26-4 last year and had their season ended by the Cougars with a 3-0 victory in the tournament championship match on their home court. This day's results would be no different as CofC posted a 25-20 decision in Game 1 before taking the match with a narrow 25-22 win in the second set.
The College of Charleston then faced one of its toughest opponents of the season in the final match of the tournament as they took on home-standing North Carolina. The Tar Heels took the first set by a 25-16 score but the Cougars would rally to notch a tie with a 25-20 victory in Game 2.
On the weekend, CofC went 3-0-1 in matches and posted a 7-1 record in games to take the tournament championship. UNC finished second with a mark of 5-3. Overall, the College of Charleston finishes the indoor portion of the spring season with a 24-3 record in games and a 9-1-1 mark in matches. Their lone loss came at the hands of Auburn, 2-1, at the Atlanta Collegiate Invitational on April 4.
“It was a great way to end the indoor season and I am excited to get out on the beach this week” concluded Kepner.
The Cougars will close out the spring season with the 2nd Annual C of C Beach Tournament at the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. on Saturday, April 17. Fellow Southern Conference members Georgia Southern, Wofford and The Citadel are scheduled to participate.
