MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston (13-17, 3-5) allowed a pair of runs to Samford (11-21, 2-10) as they dropped a 2-0 decision in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series on Saturday, April 3.
Following a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game, Samford got on the board in the third inning as freshman catcher Anna Kimbrell reached on a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double by junior right fielder Aaren Fisher. Senior pitcher Stephanie Royall then made that lead stand up as she pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only five hits, to keep the Cougars in check.
The Bulldogs would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh as junior shortstop Amanda Jordan led off with a walk, went to second on a sac bunt, stole third and scored on a groundout by freshman centerfielder Kayla Shaffer. That 2-0 lead would be all they would need as Royall allowed a two-out single in the seventh before wrapping up the victory with a groundout.
Kimbrell went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Samford while Shaffer and Fisher added an RBI each. Royall earned the victory to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Senior designated hitter Kristie Shifflett (Virginia Beach, Va.) walked twice for the College of Charleston while the rest of the lineup scattered five hits. Senior pitcher Terri Mesko (McDonough, Ga.) went all seven innings and allowed six hits, two runs and walked only one to fall to 5-7.
The College of Charleston returns to action next weekend when they travel to Western Carolina for a three-game series against the Catamounts. They will play a double-header on Saturday, April 10 beginning at 1 p.m. before closing out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 11.
