ATHENS, Ga. – The College of Charleston softball team (30-29) led 2-0 through four innings, but regional host No. 3 Georgia (39-18) rallied to defeat the Cougars 5-2 in front of 1,890 fans at the Turner Softball Stadium in the opening round of the NCAA Athens Regional on Friday night.

CRITICAL POINTS

After Mackenzie Mathis tossed two scoreless innings to extend her scoreless inning streak to 21, Bronwyn Conroy drew a two-out walk before Leela Langston hit a two-run blast to left field to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
Georgia hit two homers in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulldogs scored four runs on four hits to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs added on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Halle Cannon walked to open the top of the seventh and CofC brought the tying run to the plate, but the Cougars were unable to plate a run in the final inning.

OF NOTE

Conroy stole her 43rd base of the season and sits alone at third in the nation.
Langston hit the second home run of her career.
Conroy and Langston both recorded hits at No. 3 Georgia.
Mathis' scoreless inning streak ended at 24 scoreless innings.
The Cougars turned two double plays on Friday night.
Charleston falls to 1-12 against Georgia and 0-10 on the road.

UP NEXT

Charleston will take on No. 6 Clemson in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. With a win against the Tigers, the Cougars would play in a second elimination game tomorrow night against the loser of the winners' bracket game between No. 3 Georgia and UNC Greensboro.
