CHARLESTON, S.C. - After falling behind by 10 points, the College of Charleston women's basketball team went on a 16-0 run to seize control of the game, but faltered down the stretch as they fell 60-54 to the Samford Bulldogs Monday at TD Arena.
Three Cougars scored in double-figures, led by junior Cathryn Hardy with 15 points. Fellow junior Latisha Harris recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore Alyssa Frye added 14 points.
The Cougars (2-13, 1-5) turned the ball over four times in the first three minutes of the game, giving Samford (8-6, 3-2) an opportunity to build a 13-3 lead.
CofC stormed back with 3-pointers by Hardy, freshman Christy Hewatt and sophomore Jillian Brown as part of a 16-0 run over three minutes and 13 seconds to put the Cougars up 19-13. For the game CofC shot 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (6-of-12).
Samford responded by going on a run of their own, a 12-2 spurt and led 34-27 at halftime.
The Cougars turned up the defensive pressure to start the second half as they held the Bulldogs without a point until the 12:21 mark of the half. Over that span CofC scored nine unanswered points to go up 36-34 on a Harris jumper.
The game would be tied three times in the half before the Cougars went up three at 47-44, but Samford went on another 12-2 run to lead for the rest of the way.
For the Cougars it was one of their better shooting games, shooting 43.5 percent from the field, 80 percent from the free-throw lines and holding Samford to 34.8 shooting in the second half. The Bulldogs did a lot of their damage from beyond the 3-point arc, connecting on 10-of-23 attempts.
The Cougars will take a day off tomorrow before hitting the road Thursday for games at UNCG on Friday and at Elon on Sunday.
