CHARLESTSON, S.C. – Less than 24 hours removed from one of their best performances of the season on Friday night against James Madison, College of Charleston volleyball kept its winning ways alive on Sunday, downing the Tribe of William and Mary, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22) in front of their home faithful at TD Arena.
Hitting .270 as a team – for the second straight match – the Cougars were paced by sophomore Maddie Hills who notched a new career-high with 13 kills (.391), while also contributing defensively with four blocks. After being honored before the match for her 1,000th-kill, senior right-side hitter Sloane White added another 13 put-aways to her career tally – hitting at an impressive .375 clip. While junior Melissa Morello led the team with 15 kills, it was senior libero Andi Zbojniewicz who championed the defensive cause with 23 digs.
The Cougars came out hot in the opening set, jumping out to a 14-7 lead and never looking back. Riding the hot hand of Hills – who hit an incredible .833 in the opening game – the Cougars rolled the Tribe, 25-14, to take a one set to none advantage.
After the Tribe bounced back to claim game two, 25-23, the Cougars reasserted themselves in the third stanza taking an early 7-3 lead after a service ace from freshman Mackenzie Cooler. CofC extended its advantage to six, 17-11 after another kill from Hills, but the Tribe proved resilient, closing the gap to four at 20-16. That was as close as they would come however, as the Cougars scored five of the next seven points to claim game three, 25-18.
The fourth frame was tight throughout as neither team led by more than two until a College of Charleston min-run gave the Cougars a 11-7 lead following a kill from junior Grace Rebarchak. CofC then maintained its four point advantage at 17-13, before William and Mary played some of their best volleyball of the match en route to rattling off seven of the next eight to give themselves a 20-18 lead late in the game. Undeterred, CofC was right back in it following another kills from Hills and a clutch service ace from McKown, before the Cougars were able to close it out, 25-22, courtesy of a huge double block from Mummey and White on match point.
The Cougars have now won nine of their last eleven matches.
Next up for the The College is a critical Northeast road swing to face Delaware on Friday, Oct. 31 and Towson on Sunday, Nov. 2.
