WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After falling behind early against William & Mary on Friday night at the Kaplan Center, College of Charleston volleyball roared back to win three straight sets and claim their third conference win of the season, 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23).
It was senior Cara Howley who led the charge offensively for The College (11-7, 3-0 CAA), hitting .289 en route to a 17 kill, 14 dig performance. CAA Rookie of the Week Krissy Mummey grabbed 10 kills and four blocks while senior libero Andi Zbojniewicz chipped in with 25 digs. Freshman setter Mackenzie Cooler also picked up her first double-double of the season with 21 assists and 12 digs.
After dropping a tough first set to the Tribe (4-13, 0-3 CAA), 25-17, the Cougars bounced back in game two. Despite falling behind early, the Cougars quickly tied the set at 6-6 following a kill from Howley and a handling error from the Tribe. From there, the Cougars would never again trail, extending their advantage to 13-7, courtesy of back-to-back kills from sophomore middle blocker Maddie Hills. After another Tribe error gave the Cougars a set point, it was Sloane White who hammered home to close out the game, 25-20.
The Cougars then came out firing in the third game, riding kills from White and Howley – as well as three Tribe attack errors – to jump out to a 6-1 lead. After William & Mary crawled back in to the set, taking a 17-16 lead, The College rattled off nine of the next twelve points to claim the third set, 25-20.
The fourth frame then started in the Cougars favor as kills from Howley, White, Mummey and Hills helped the Cougars open a 9-4 advantage. After a CofC handling error brought the Tribe level at 12-12, kills from White and Mummey helped The College score eight of the next 10 points to take a 20-14 lead. William & Mary again managed their way back in to the match, however, eventually tying the fourth stanza at 22-22. Kills from White and Melissa Morello put the Cougars one point away at 24-23, before White put-away her seventh kill of the night to seal the game and the match.
The Cougars have now won 18 of their last 19 matches against conference opposition, dating back to last season's regular season and conference championship team.
Next up for the Cougars is a Sunday showdown with another Virginia based conference foe in James Madison, in Harrisonburg, Va., where first serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
