BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU extended its win streak to six games with an 71-47 victory over upset-minded College of Charleston on Monday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Tigers (9-2), who were picked to finish fourth in the SEC, went on a 23-7 run in the first 12 minutes of play as the Cougars (5-7) couldn't find their rhythm offensively against one of the top front courts in the country.
CofC shot a season-low 28.1 percent from the floor (18-of-64), while LSU's big men and NBA prospects Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey combined for 33 of the team's points. Mickey ended the night with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Martin with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Charleston had three players score in double figures including a team-high 13 from senior Anthony Stitt (Charlotte, N.C.), 11 from sophomore Canyon Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and 10 from freshman Donovan Gilmore (Greensboro, N.C.).
The second half saw improvement by CofC of being able to attack and get to the rim. They rattled off four of the first five points on a Barry layup at 19:36 and Stitt jumper at 18:14 to cut the lead down to 17 after halftime.
LSU wouldn't allow the margin to get any closer as the Cougars fell on the road for the second time this season against an SEC foe. The Tigers made an opponent season-high 11 blocked shots and outrebounded CofC, 43-34.
Up next, the Cougars will take time off during the holiday break, before another tough road trip to ACC opponent Miami (Fla.) on Dec. 30 in Miami, Fla. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com.

POSTGAME QUOTES
College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant
On the game …
“I thought obviously we weren't prepared for LSU's athleticism. They challenged a lot of shots at the rim. There were shots we could have made, but for whatever reason we went up and expected to get blocked. We just didn't finish well.”
On LSU's Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey's performance …
“Obviously, they are both talented players with good size and good athleticism. They (LSU) should have a good year in the SEC. They are both very athletic and very long. They challenge you at the rim. They are really tough match-ups one-on-one.”
