MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team exploded for seven runs in the first inning to help lead them to an 11-6 victory over UMass Friday afternoon at Patriots Point.
“It was great to see the team answer right back with seven runs after UMass scored three in the first inning,” explained head coach Linda Kalafatis. “We're getting productivity from a lot of people on offense and it makes it hard to throw against us. Each time we play, we're learning more about ourselves and it's fun to watch.”
The Minutewomen lead, 3-0, after back-to-back doubles in the top of the first. The Cougars would regain the lead quickly with 13 batters scoring seven runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning.
Valerie Cassell relieved starter Samantha Martin in the second inning and pitched six strong frames striking out six and allowing only one earned run. The College would extend the lead, 9-4, after RBI's from Katie Padilla and Chandler Frisbie in the bottom of the fourth.
Mackenzie Maples and Rebecca Mueller would both pick up their second RBI of the day in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back hits. The Cougars would finish the day with 11 runs on 13 hits and seven different batters contributing an RBI.
CofC will continue play in the Cougar Classic Saturday with matchups against Pittsburgh at 12:30 p.m. and Bowling Green immediately after at 2:30 p.m.. Both games will be streamed on the Charleston Sports Network.
