MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team scored five runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating Elon, 5-1, to take the series Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Senior Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) picked up her second victory in as many days, shutting out the Pheonix over 5 2/3 innings, scattering four hits and striking out four.
CofC got on the board in the first inning after Taylor DuPree (Evans, Ga) led the game off with a walk followed by a Mackenzie Maples (Corona, Calif.) single. DuPree scored on a single by Rebecca Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif.) to take the 1-0 lead.
The College would lead off the second inning with back-to-back singles by Chandler Frisbie (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Allison Pedigo (Scottsville, Ky.). After a walk by DuPree, Mueller would clear the bases with a triple to right center field and give CofC a 5-0 lead.
Mueller paced The College at the plate going 2-3 with 4 RBIs. DuPree was 1-2 with two walks and two runs scored and Pedigo was 2-2 along with scoring a run in the second inning.
Elon would begin a comeback effort in the seventh after leading off the inning with back-to-back singles. Samantha Martin (Tallahassee, Fla.) would settle down and strike out the next two batters before surrendering a walk to load the bases.
Valerie Cassell (Edison, N.J.) would come in to close the deal for the Cougars, ending the Phoenix threat striking out Kara Shutt and picking up her second save of the season.
