HARRISONBURG, Va. – College of Charleston baseball solidified a Colonial Athletic Association series win over James Madison with a 10-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
Charleston (16-7, 5-0 CAA) eclipsed Friday's 16-hit performance with 17 more hits on Saturday to remain unbeaten in league play. The Cougars reached their leadoff hitter on six occasions and batted .417 (5-for-12) with runners in scoring position. The Cougars also delivered in critical situations, with 6-of-10 runs scoring with two outs.
Brandon Glazer (5-0) earned his fourth win in his last five appearances for the Cougars, pitching 5.0 innings with four runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Eric Bauer earned his first save after going 4.0 innings and scattering four hits.
Freshman Ryan Brown had a career day, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs, four runs scored, and his first career homerun. Nick Pappas went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and homered as well, while Carl Wise went 3-for-3 with two walks and yet another multiple-RBI outing.
“We did a really good job of getting the leadoff guy on base today and we had a big inning in the eighth, which was huge in order for us to separate from James Madison,” said head coach Monte Lee. “The big key was getting leadoff guys on base and swinging the bats well. We score 10 runs again today with several guys hitting the ball hard and getting productive at bats. We went out and got the job done, and we won the series.”
Just like game one on Friday night, the Cougars got on the board right away after Ryan Brown once again led the game off with a single. Brown scored on an RBI single by Wise, one batter later than he did on Friday night.
In the second, Alex Pastorius led off by singling through the left side and worked his way around the bases before scoring on a two-out, full-count RBI single by Brown.
JMU picked up its first run of the series in the bottom of the second when Brett Johnson homered to right, cutting the score to 2-1.
Nick Pappas followed suit with his own homer beyond the fence in right after Wise led off the top of the third with a walk, extending CofC's lead to 4-1.
JMU battled back in the bottom of the inning, ultimately leveling the score with three runs on three hits in the frame. Chad Carroll drove an RBI double into the corner in left, and Ky Parrott homered to cap the comeback.
The score wouldn't stay tied long, however, as Brown legged out an infield single and scored on a two-out RBI single by Wise in the next half inning.
The score held there until the Cougars managed to blow it open with four runs on three hits in the eighth. CofC loaded the bases with walks by Brown and Wise sandwiched around a Bradley Jones single, and Blake Butler found an optimum time to extend his hitting streak to 19 games by driving an RBI single through the left side. Morgan Phillips drove an RBI sacrifice fly out to left center, and Nick Pappas pushed an RBI single through the right side. With runners on the corners, CofC executed a double-steal maneuver, with Pappas stalling between first and second long enough for Butler to score before Pappas was tagged out as the third out of the inning.
Parrott hit his second homer of the game to cut the score to 9-5 in the eighth, and Brown and JMU's Michael Sciorra both homered in their respective halves of the ninth, pushing the score to 10-6.
The Cougars will look to wrap up their second CAA series sweep with game three on Sunday scheduled for 2 p.m. Lefty Wade Arduini is scheduled to start for the Cougars.
POSTGAME NOTES
Freshman Ryan Brown set new career highs with four hits and four runs scored, and also hit his first career homerun. Four of the first five Cougar runs came with two outs, and six of their total 10.
The Cougars have now homered at least once in 11 of their last 13 games. CofC is 9-1 when hitting two or more homeruns in a game.
