CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston senior slugger Mackenzie Maples was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for all games March 30-April 5 as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Maples, a native of Corona, Calif., completed a prolific week at the plate to lead the Cougars a series victory over Delaware in CAA play.
“Mackenzie is having such a great senior season and it is nice to see her get recognized for her accomplishments,” said Head Coach Linda Kalafatis. “She has been a key producer and has caught every inning of every ball game this year. As we enter the last month of the season Mackenzie will continue to be a key player for us going down the stretch.”
The team captain went 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate on the weekend adding her team leading fifth homer and slugging .889. Maples played a key role in the Cougars doubleheader sweep over Delaware on Saturday, accounting for both runs in CofC's, 2-1, game-one victory and contributing three RBIs in the Cougars, 5-3 game-two win.
On the week, she drove in six runs and scored twice as she boosted her batting average to .316. The senior also leads the Cougars in five offensive categories including runs scored (28), doubles (10), home runs (5), RBI (29) and slugging (.547).
She was also perfect defensively from behind the plate contributing 21 putouts and gunning down two steal attempts over the week.
The College will be back in action Wednesday, April 8th as they travel across town to Charleston Southern for a midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
