MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team fell to Hofstra, 11-5, in their season-finale on Senior Day at Patriots Point Saturday afternoon.
“While I know I didn't get to spend all four years of their careers with them, I know that these four seniors love the College of Charleston and embraced their experience with the softball program,” said head coach Linda Kalafatis. “They were great teammates and are even better people. I know they'll be successful in whatever endeavors lie ahead.”
To begin the game, head coach Linda Kalafatis started injured senior pitcher Hope Klicker as a gesture of respect to one of the programs greatest pitchers. The lefty ranks second in school history in wins (69), appearances (128), starts (96), complete games (49), and strikeouts (534).
Senior Alex Pizzoli was brought out to the circle after an ovation for Klicker, to make her second start of the season.
Seniors Mackenzie Maples and Allison Pedigo shared success at the dish on Senior Day. Maples went 1-3 with a triple and two runs scored while Pedigo finished the day with two singles.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off of the bat and base running of Mackenzie Maples. Maples laced a triple to right center in her first at-bat and scored on a wild throw giving CofC an early lead.
Hofstra would answer quickly in the next half inning off of two home runs. A solo shot by Lacey Clark and a three run homer by Brielle Pietrafesa would give Hofstra a 4-1 lead after two innings.
The Pride would tack on four more runs to their lead in the third behind a grand slam by Brittany Allocca, giving them an 8-1 lead. The College would answer in the bottom half of the inning behind an RBI double from Rebecca Mueller but the Cougars still would trail 8-2 after three innings.
The Cougars would begin a valiant comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning after back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by Brianna Davis, Victoria Bratcher, and Taylor DuPree to cut Hofstra's lead to 9-5.
The rally would be cut short as the Pride tacked on two more runs in the sixth and seventh inning, bringing the final score to 11-5.
The Cougars finish their 2015 campaign with a 24-29 overall record while going 8-13 in their second full season in the Colonial Athletic Association.
