CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team (9-5-1; 2-2-1 vs. CAA) embarks upon their final road trip of the regular season this weekend, which will pit the Cougars against James Madison (6-8; 3-2 vs. CAA) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Towson (5-9-1; 2-3 vs. CAA) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars split their last two games over the weekend, falling 3-0 to Drexel before rallying from down 2-0 to stun Delaware 4-2 last Sunday. Jessica Schifer recorded a two-goal afternoon against the Blue Hens, while her running mate Laura Ortega registered a goal and an assist. Bailie Fout earned the first start of her collegiate career Sunday, making six saves against UD to take home the victory.
The Dukes and Tigers both come off a quiet weekend during which the two only played one another. Towson's Evelyn Neidert scored first on the opening play of the second half before Ashley Herndon got the tying talley for JMU with 11 minutes to go in regulation. It wasn't until double overtime that James Madison got the win thanks to Allie Bunner capitalizing on a failed clearance.
When the College met these teams last season, they fell to JMU 1-0, and tied Towson 0-0. The latter was a goaltending clinic on both sides of the pitch, with CofC's Lauren Killian (10) and Towson's Taylor Sebolao (12) combining for 22 saves.
This weekend's action will be crucially important in sorting out an ultra-competitive CAA playoff picture. Northeastern (15 Pts) and Drexel (13 Pts) currently sit atop the standings, while Hofstra (3 Pts) is down at the bottom. All seven remaining CAA teams are somewhere between 6 and 9 Pts, meaning the difference between third and ninth place in the conference is the difference between one win.
